On the eleventh day til Christmas, my Great Aunts gave to me
these haikus about them:
As Southern Baptists
their creative expression
involves Jesus Christ
Hilda:
stopped at rest stop
for lunch on a long road trip
she ate her napkin
her curled hair flowing
perfectly pressed church outfit
lipstick tarnished teeth
big family dinners
marshmallow fruit salads and
her cookie delight
connect crocheted squares
make matching vests and blanket
while watching Oprah
once again, misplaced
abandoned in the trashcan,
there are her car keys
Gilda:
her second new car
she points the keyless entry
arms stretched, yells “STAND BACK!”
checkerboard patterned
tons of pink and white bath mats
covering her floor
teen Christmas present
inherited her old bra
now brown and dingy
black cat in her yard
she proclaims, “it’s the devil”
old superstitions
she says it’s cancer
home remedy cured it up
rub honey on thighs
